North Korea fires intercontinental ballistic missile into waters near Japan after threatening US

North Korea fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) into waters near Japan on Wednesday, July 11, 2023. The missile flew for more than 70 minutes, reaching an altitude of over 6,200 kilometers (3,900 miles). It landed in the waters outside Japan's exclusive economic zone.

The launch was the first time that North Korea had fired an ICBM since 2017. It also came just days after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un threatened to "take a new path" of action if the United States does not meet his demands.

The launch was condemned by the United States, Japan, and South Korea. The United States said that it would "respond decisively" to any further provocations from North Korea.

The launch is a major escalation of tensions on the Korean Peninsula. It is also a reminder of the threat that North Korea poses to the United States and its allies.

Here are some of the reactions to the launch: United States:  "The United States strongly condemns the DPRK's ballistic missile launch. This launch is a clear violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions and poses a threat to the United States, our allies, and partners in the region. We will continue to work with our allies and partners to hold the DPRK accountable for its actions."  - Secretary of State Antony Blinken

Japan "The launch of an ICBM by the DPRK is a serious threat to the peace and security of Japan and the region. We strongly condemn this act and call on the DPRK to immediately cease its destabilizing actions."  - Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida

South Korea: "The launch of an ICBM by the DPRK is a grave provocation that undermines peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the region. We strongly condemn this act and call on the DPRK to immediately cease its destabilizing actions."  - South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol

The launch is a reminder of the importance of diplomacy in resolving the North Korean nuclear issue. The United States and its allies must continue to work together to find a peaceful solution to this crisis.l
