National Mathematics Day 2022: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, on February 26, 2012, declared December 22 to be celebrated as the National Mathematics Day to mark Srinivasa Ramanujan’s birth anniversary.

It was introduced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 26 December 2011 at Madras University, to mark the 125th birth anniversary of the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. On this occasion Prime minister Manmohan Singh also announced that 2012 would be celebrated as the National Mathematics Year.

Srinivasa Ramanujan, the Indian mathematical genius, was born on this day in 1887. Ramanujan was born to a Tamil Brahmin Iyengar family at Erode, Tamil Nadu. Srinivasa Ramanujan is also known as the ‘man who knew infinity’. Ramanujan who did not receive any formal education in Mathematics has made several important contributions to the field of Mathematics.
